In the heart of the Dry River Wilderness
48 inches lower and none would care
But somehow Isolation is a thoroughfare

7 miles uphill to the mountain top
You’d think we be glad for the climb to stop
But anther 1,300 feet up we must rise
Just to look back and down at our trophy’s size

4,100 feet of up
4,003 foot summit?
Now Greg’s out of water
In the hot sun above treeline

Could be on our couches
Eating bon-bons with our feet up
Napping and snacking
Watching Netflix
But noooooooo!

In the shadow of Franconia Ridge
In the depths of the Pemigewasset
Where the owl asks not who but rather why?

Over 9 miles each way from Lincoln Woods
What could make such an odyssey worthwhile?
A steep climb and a path to stand of trees
And stupid rocks in a man-made pile!

Feet are getting blistered
8 miles from the car
The road had better viewpoints
Oh how foolish we are

Could be out for coffee
Sipping latte’s with our friends
Laughing and relaxing, watching youtube
But nooooo!

At long last we retire to the Muddy Moose
For some hard-earned post hike replenishment
But watching Ross eat his fries one at a time
May expire the remainder of Greg’s time line

He endured and survived through the wilderness
But why has Ross still only eaten three bites?
Will Greg make it home to his family
Or will he be a casual dining casualty?

But through the pain and drudgery
The trails produce an ecstasy
That defies rationality
And sets our souls free
